Activities in the procedure for the award of the doktor degree – procedure for extramural doktor degree
1. The application for the appointment of a supervisor/assistant supervisor (appendix 7 to the Regulations) must be submitted at least 14 days before the meeting of the Committee for academic degrees in the discipline of management and quality sciences at the University of Lodz.
2. The application shall be accompanied by:
• a statement by the supervisor – appendix 4 to the Regulations,
• a copy or photocopy (certified as a true copy by the entity issuing the document) of a diploma confirming the possession of a professional degree of Master of Science, Master of Engineering or equivalent, or a diploma referred to in Article 326(2)(2) or Article 327(2) of the Law, giving the right to apply for a doktor degree in the state, where the higher education system in which the university that issued it operates,
In the case of a candidate who completed their studies outside the Republic of Poland and whose diploma was issued in a language other than Polish or English, a translation of the diploma into one of these languages must be submitted. The translation must be prepared and certified by a sworn translator, or prepared by a foreign translator and certified by the competent Consul of the Republic of Poland.
• a certificate (appendix 1 to the Regulations) in a modern foreign language or a university diploma, certifying knowledge of this language at a language proficiency level of at least B2 (a mandatory requirement at the stage of submitting the application for the appointment of a Committee for conducting doctoral examinations),
• personal questionnaire – appendix 6 to the Regulations,
• a statement of having read and understood the GDPR information clause – appendix 11 to the Regulations,
• information on scientific achievements including authorship/co-authorship (in accordance with the provisions set forth in Article 186 (1) item. 3 Law of July 20, 2018. – Law on Higher Education and Science) – a requirement necessary for initiating doctoral proceedings) – sample 1
- 1 scientific article published in a scientific journal or in peer-reviewed materials of an international conference, which, in the year the article was published in its final form, was included in the list compiled in accordance with the regulations issued pursuant to Article 267 (2)(2)(b):
- list of journals or
- 1 scientific monograph published by a publishing house which, in the year of the publication of the monograph in its final form, was included in the list drawn up in accordance with the regulations issued pursuant to Article 267(2)(2)(a), or a chapter in such a monograph (list of publishing houses),
- candidate’s statement regarding the obligation to pay the fee for the doctoral proceedings - sample 4.
An individual who has previously sought a doktor degree should include details regarding the progress of the doctoral dissertation or the procedures for obtaining a doktor degree from the institution where they were pursued.
A person applying for a doktor degree, after the appointment of a supervisor and until the commencement of the doktor degree award procedure, is required to pass doctoral examinations and meet the learning outcomes requirements for level 8 of the Polish Qualifications Framework.
1. Before taking doctoral examinations, you must submit an application (sample 2) to the University of Lodz Committee for Academic Degrees in Management and Quality Sciences at least 14 days before the meeting, requesting the appointment of examination boards.
2. Doctoral examinations are taken in the following fields:
• a leading discipline corresponding to the subject of the doctoral dissertation (management and quality sciences) – consisting of at least four persons holding the title of professor in the field of science to which this scientific discipline belongs or the degree of the doktor habilitowany in this scientific discipline; or persons who have acquired powers equivalent to those conferred by doktor degree and are engaged in scientific or teaching activities in this scientific discipline, as well as the dissertation supervisor(s);
• an additional discipline (economics and finance*, sociological sciences, philosophy, psychology) – with at least three persons, at least one of whom holds a professorship in the field of science to which this scientific discipline belongs or a doktor degree in this scientific discipline or has acquired equivalent rights, the entitlements of a doktor habilitowany degree and conducts scientific or teaching activities in this scientific discipline;
*compulsory examination for persons who did not complete economics courses.
• a modern foreign language – consisting of at least three persons, at least one of whom teaches this language in a higher education institution, and the others hold at least a doktor degree. Compulsory examination in the absence of a certificate (appendix 1 to the Regulations) or a diploma certifying knowledge of this language at the B2 level at least.
3. Following the successful completion of the doctoral examinations, the supervisor must, within 14 days of the last examination, provide the Committee with the results of the assessment of study effects – appendix 8 of the Regulations – Komunikat nr 1/2023 Przewodniczącego Komisji Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego ds. stopni naukowych przykładowe aktywności potwierdzające osiągnięcie efektów uczenia się na poziomie 8 PRK.
4. Passing doctoral examinations and achieving the requirements for the Level 8 of the Polish Qualifications Framework regarding the learning outcomes enables the initiation of doctoral proceedings and the submission of a doctoral dissertation.
1. The candidate for the award of a doktor degree shall submit – at least 14 days prior to the meeting of the Committee for academic degrees in the discipline of management and quality sciences at the University of Lodz – the application for the initiation of proceedings for the conferment of a doktor degree (appendix 5 to the Regulations).
2. The application shall be accompanied by:
- the dissertation, together with an abstract in the appropriate language submitted in printed form (1 copy) together with its digital version in pdf format on an electronic data carrier, signed with a qualified electronic signature or trusted profile (an electronic version of the dissertation together with the abstract should be sent to nauka.wz@uni.lodz.pl),
- an abstract in English, and if the dissertation is prepared in a foreign language, also an abstract in Polish, together with its electronic version, which should be sent to nauka.wz@uni.lodz.pl,
- a positive opinion (sample 3b) from the supervisor or supervisors,
- general report of the anti-plagiarism system of the aforementioned doctoral dissertation (using JSA) – prepared by the supervisor,
- updated information on academic achievements – sample 1,
- updated personal questionnaire – appendix 6 to the Regulations,
- the statement of having read and understood the GDPR information clause – appendix 11 to the Regulations.
3. The Committee for Academic Degrees appoint three reviewers from among persons who are not employees of the doctoral subject and the university, institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, research institute, and international institute whose employee is the applicant for the doktor degree.
4. The dissertation reviewers are recommended to the UL Commission by the Dean's College, selecting three of the five candidates proposed by the dissertation supervisor.
5. The reviewers shall prepare a review of the doctoral dissertation within 2 months from the date of its delivery.
If the author of the doctoral dissertation has used or intends to use confidential information constituting a legally protected secret in preparing the dissertation, they shall submit a written, reasoned request to the chairperson of the relevant UL Committee for Academic Degrees for the dissertation to be classified as confidential. The request must include the opinion of the doctoral supervisor, and, in justified cases, the opinion of a representative of the entity/company requesting the confidentiality classification – appendix 15 to the Regulations.
Any person involved in the preparation of the dissertation, including in the procedure for awarding the doktor degree, and having access to confidential information – including administrative employees – shall be required to sign a confidentiality declaration - appendix 16 to the Regulations.
1. A person who has received positive reviews from at least two reviewers and has met the requirements referred to in Article 186, paragraph 1, item 5 of the Law may be admitted to the defence.
2. After obtaining positive reviews (from at least two reviewers), the doctoral student shall provide the Science Unit with an electronic version of the self-reference.
3. The administrative secretary shall, no later than 30 days before the scheduled defence day, make available in the BIP of the University of Lodz the dissertation that is a written thesis, together with its abstract in the appropriate language, or a description of the dissertation that is not a written thesis and reviews.
4. In the case of a doctoral dissertation, the subject of which is covered by a legally protected secret, and has therefore been classified as confidential, only reviews are made available, excluding the contents covered by this secret. Reviews excluding the contents of legally protected secrets are forwarded to the administrative secretary by the supervisor.
5. After reviewing the case file, in particular the dissertation and reviews, the University of Lodz Committee for scientific degrees shall issue a decision on admission to the defence of the dissertation, at the same time appointing a doctoral committee and setting a date for the defence.
6. In case when the application for the initiation of proceedings for the award of the doctoral degree includes a request for consent to conduct the defence in English, the University of Lodz Committee for scientific degrees issues a decision on granting consent to conduct the defence in that language.
7. No later than 10 days before the designated date of the defence, the applicant for the doktor degree is required to:
- deposit the electronic version of the dissertation in pdf format with an abstract in the appropriate language reviews, and declaration (appendix 3 to the Regulations), and provide its correct description in the University of Lodz Repository (https://repozytorium.uni.lodz.pl). For matters related to depositing documents, please contact the Repository team – e-mail: repozytorium@lib.uni.lodz.pl
- submit a signed statement on the release of the dissertation deposited in the UL Repository to the administrative secretary for archiving purpose - appendix 3 to the Regulations.
The obligation to deposit the electronic version of the dissertation in the UL Repository in pdf format together with the abstract and correct description does not apply to dissertations classified as confidential.
8. The administrative secretary shall, no later than 10 days before the scheduled date of the defence, make available in the BIP of the UL information on the date, place and manner of its defence, and, in the case of a doctoral dissertation classified as confidential, information on the non-public nature of the defence.
If a dissertation is not admitted to defence, or if a decision is issued refusing to award the doktor degree, that same dissertation may not serve as the basis for a subsequent application for the doktor degree.
1. The defence shall take place at a meeting of the Doctoral Committee and shall be public in nature.
2. The defence of a doctoral dissertation covered by a confidentiality clause shall be non-public.
3. The meeting is attended by at least one reviewer.
4. The meeting of the Doctoral Committee may be attended, without voting rights, by a supervisor and an assistant supervisor.
5. The doctoral committee may submit a request to the University of Lodz Committee for a doctoral dissertation to be awarded honor. The criteria to be met for the dissertation to be distinguished shall be determined by the Committee through a resolution effective for the duration of its term – Uchwała nr 39/N/2025 Komisji Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego do spraw stopni naukowych w dyscyplinie nauki o zarządzaniu i jakości z 10 lutego 2025 r. w sprawie szczegółowych zasad przyznawania wyróżnień rozprawom doktorskim.
6. Upon completion of the defence, in a closed session, the Doctoral Committee issues a decision on the acceptance/refuse to accept of the dissertation defence.
7. Within 7 days, the minutes of the defence, together with the decision, are forwarded to the UL Commission for Degrees.
1. The decision on awarding the doktor degree shall be made by the Committee for academic degrees in the discipline of management and quality sciences at the University of Lodz.
2. The Committee, at the request of the Doctoral Committee, may decide to honor the dissertation.
1. A person who has been awarded a doktor degree is obliged to deliver to the Science Unit within one week of the awarding:
• a photocopy of the proof of payment for the issuance of the original doktor degree together with a copy in Polish (60 PLN – for a copy in Polish) or a printed confirmation from the Internet of the payment to the University of Lodz account no:
Pekao S.A. II/O Lodz 86 1240 3028 1111 0000 2822 2488 with the annotation “Fee for a doctoral diploma – Faculty of Management, University of Lodz”;
• persons interested in a copy of the diploma in English shall submit to the Science Unit (room 8) an application addressed to the Evaluation and Discipline Development Centre of the University of Lodz with the translated title of the dissertation together with a copy of the fee (account number as above) for the issuance of an additional copy (80 PLN).
2. A person who has been awarded a doktor degree is obliged, within one month from the date of awarding:
• fill out the SYNABA form using the app - Nauka Polska – jak zmienić swoje dane bazie – Ludzie Nauki
• to send an electronic version of the SYNABA via e-mail to OPI PIB at: synaba@opi.org.pl
• to deliver to the Science Unit a printed and signed SYNABA
A person applying for a doktor degree shall pay a fee for conducting the proceedings in accordance with the current regulation: Zarządzenie nr 209 Rektora Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego z dnia 24.09.2025 r. w sprawie: zasad finansowania na Uniwersytecie Łódzkim kosztów postępowań w sprawie nadania stopnia doktora, stopnia doktora habilitowanego oraz tytułu profesora.
